Symbaroum invites you to join in the adventure! Enter the vast Forest of Davokar on a hunt for treasure, lost wisdom and fame. It’s time to explore the heart of the ancient forest. "Mother of Darkness" is what the witches of the barbarian clans call the ruined city of Symbar, once the capital of the empire of Symbaroum. It has long been lost, but just recently its position has been pinpointed, triggering a rush of competing factions mounting expeditions in the hope of arriving there first. The journey will be long, the rivalry fierce and bloody, and none of the competitors truly know what to expect if they manage to reach the ruins alive.
SYMBAR - MOTHER OF DARKNESS is the fourth installment of the epic CHRONICLE OF THE THRONE OF THORNS, for the award-winning Symbaroum tabletop roleplaying game. It is also a good starting point if you have never played Symbaroum before – you can jump right into the action and head straight for the grand prize!

The dark fantasy roleplaying game Symbaroum was launched in 2015 and has captured the imagination of thousands of gamers with its evocative art and rich game setting. “Symbaroum excels in every single aspect of game design: the setting, the rules, the layout, the art.” – Antonios S, RPGnet
“The simple system and rich setting, thick with dark and evocative imagery, makes this a worthy consideration for new and experienced gamers alike.” – Paul Baldowski, GeekNative
“All in all, this is a stunning piece of work. It has all the sophistication of 13th Age, the mechanical beauty of Dungeon World, and the dark attractiveness of Warhammer Fantasy in a comprehensive and elegant game.” – Rodney Orpheus, Medium
SYMBAR – MOTHER OF DARKNESS is the fourth episode in the Chronicle of the Throne of Thorns. The approximately 200 page book is a standalone sequel to Thistle Hold – Wrath of the Warden, Karvosti – The Witch Hammer and Yndaros – The Darkest Star, and will be followed by two more episodes.
It is through these campaign and adventure modules that we will keep building the world of Symbaroum. Aside from an in-depth introduction to a specific region in Ambria, Davokar or beyond, each book will introduce new optional rules and features: abilities, (monstrous) traits, mystical powers and rituals, creatures, artifacts, elixirs and much more!
Looking at this forth episode in particular, it focuses on the depths of the vast Forest of Davokar – a dark, mysterious and lethal region, filled with remnants from the ancient empire of Symbaroum, guarded by the elves of the Iron Pact, and teeming with beasts, monsters and raving abominations.
The book is divided into three sections which may be described as follows:
The opening section is meant to be read by both players and Game Masters. In this fourth episode, it introduces an in-game travelers journal, written and illustrated by the expedition leader Vidina, describing her journey to a temple ruin deep inside the Forest of Davokar. Also, the section gives voice to rumors which can be heard in more civilized places, about the forest and its inhabitants. The section is designed to serve four specific purposes:
The second section is for the Game Master’s eyes only, and offers a deep descent beneath the surface. A significant part is devoted to truths and secrets which may be used to produce homebrew adventures or even lengthy campaigns, but the majority of the section introduces new and optional rules and guidelines – most of which will come into use when playing Mother of Darkness. To be brief, the section includes:
In many respects, Mother of Darkness marks the turning point of the adventure series. Although exploration is its primary theme, it also leaves room for intrigue, social challenges, stealthy maneuvers and thundering action. This is true for the preparations in Thistle Hold (Act I), the month-long journey into the dark (Act II), and especially for the adventure landscape awaiting those who manage to get there alive (Act III). More than this should probably not be said here, as not to spoil the joy of new discoveries…
Are you a Game Master? If so you should take a closer look at the eBook Symbaroum – The Throne of Thorns, which introduces the main theme, agents and episodes of the Chronicle as a whole. It is currently being revised and an update should be available before summer 2019, but it still gives a fair account of the intrigues and events of the main story line. To download it, click HERE.
So, for any newcomers, what is Symbaroum? The game was first launched in Swedish, in July 2014 by the publisher Järnringen. About one year later, in November 2015, the English edition of the Core Rulebook was introduced – first as an eBook, later available in print from Järnringen and Modiphius, and finally it reached retailers all around the world in April 2016. Licensing deals are in place for a handful of translations and before the summer of 2019 Symbaroum will also be available in French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazilian) and Spanish. In late 2018, the company Järnringen merged with Free League Publishing (Fria Ligan) and of course Symbaroum (and its whole team) came along as well, making it one in a series of highly popular, award-winning and critically acclaimed RPGs – including Mutant: Year Zero, Tales from the Loop, Forbidden Lands and Coriolis - The Third Horizon.
Down below you will find a number of links taking you to documents or web pages with more information on Symbaroum. Should you wish to talk to people who are already playing the game, your best bet is to look up the group Symbaroum at Reddit or the newly launched Free League Symbaroum Forum. Members of the Symbaroum team also stop by at those places from time to time.
Symbaroum is more than woods and ruins, as seen in this teaser trailer, featured in the kickstarter for Yndaros - The Darkest Star, episode III in the Throne of Thorns.
